Chapter Fifteen

Gen didn't remember falling asleep.

Warm lips trailing over her neck woke her, and she moaned at how good it felt.

Fingers slipped under her shirt and, still half asleep, she lifted her arms when it was eased it over her head, leaving her in just her bra and sweatpants.

Both the sweatpants and the shirt had been too big for her, but that had been all she could find in the dresser.

After Francois had announced over the intercom that it was safe for her to unbuckle her seatbelt, she’d gone to check on Ethan before having a shower and changing out of her bloodstained clothes.

She’d found a pair of nail scissors in the bathroom and spent several long minutes cutting the clothes off Ethan before sponging him clean, trying to avoid staring at the stab wounds and slashes that covered him, too numerous to count.

She’d failed.

After she got to twenty, she stopped counting. Not because she wanted to, but because her eyes were so filled with tears, so could no longer see.

Gen opened her eyes, and her gaze connected with Ethan’s heated stare as he lay with his body braced over hers.

As soon as she did, as if that was all he’d been waiting for, he dipped his head and kissed her.

Her mouth parted when his tongue slid across the seam of her lips, and he gave her more of his weight as she took her time exploring his mouth with her tongue.

He tasted of mint mouthwash, and when Gen raised her hands to his hair, it was damp.

After long minutes of drugging kisses, she curved first one leg, and then the other around his hips, because she needed more. She craved more.

His erection sank deep into the vee of her thighs, and they both groaned.

But when his kiss deepened and his grip tightened around her, leaving her feeling trapped beneath him, she froze as panic and fear rose.

She was back in the cemetery, the vampire above her, and there was nothing she could do to stop him from hurting her.

Immediately, Ethan lifted his head. And although he wasn’t trying to hide the heat in his eyes, there was a question on his lips.

Gen shook her head, and just like that he moved off her.

Without a word, she was scrambling for the edge of the bed, trembling all over as she searched for the shirt Ethan had removed.

She couldn’t find it.

She’d just given up on it and was rising to go hide in the bathroom until she could stop herself from shaking when Ethan spoke.

"Genevieve?" Ethan murmured.

A peek told her all she needed to know. He was looking at her like she was weak. As if she was a fragile, breakable thing.

She couldn’t bear it. “I can’t do this.”

“Don’t run.”

It was his choice of words that stopped her.

Was she always running? It was beginning to feel like she always was. “I’m not running,” she said, turning, her anger sparking. “This isn’t me running.”

Ethan examined her with a hint of a smile touching his lips.
